Significant Figures (or Significant Digits)
All measurements are approximations—no measuring device can give perfect measurements without some uncertainty. You "guess" when you use analog tools like rulers or thermometers and digital tools like balances and probes "guess" when they round. The degree to which we round is expressed in terms of the number of significant figures we record. IMPORTANT: Counted (exact) numbers and conversion factors have INFINITE significant figures!
Navigating Dimensional Analysis (Factor-Label) Method
Dimensional analysis (factor-label method) is used to keep track of and cancel out units in multi-step conversion problems. Conversion factors are set up in fraction form and lined up sequentially so units used on the top and bottom of neighboring fractions cancel. It's a lot like creating a huge fraction!
